Ground Work

Groundwork, the foundation of my training whether starting a horse or reschooling a horse, consists of two exercises: lunging ,work-in-hand.  Both exercises offer many benefits to prepare the horse for under saddle work.  They also offer important information in determining the mental and physical comfort of the horse.  For example a physical weakness or unevenness in gaits can be detected before mounting.  Also the mental attitude of the horse can be determined as well. It is best to resolve any glaring mental or physical issues from the ground first because it will be easier for the horse without the complication of a rider.
